Interview with historical novelist Jana Petken, author of “The Errant Flock”

25925567Last week I came across a particularly good book of historical fiction about the Spanish Inquisition:
“The Errant Flock” by Jana Petken. I immediately had to re-blog one of Jana’s blog posts about the book here.

I invited her to come on my blog for an interview and luckily she kindly agreed. Before we start, here is what some of the reviewers had to say about her book:

“Impressive!

Author Jana Petken has accomplished something remarkable with this book. She’s taken the dark and uncomfortable subject of the Spanish Inquisition and turned it into an engrossing masterpiece. The rich details of the period, and the attention to historical accuracy enhance the reader’s experience.”

“This is quite a dark tale about the Spanish Inquisition and I must say: a book with a brilliant title. In the Spain of 1491 a lot of people are errant in all of its meanings. The superstitions around perceiving a male heir, the contemporary views on monarchy, religion, race and status – this is a welcome reminder of how dark those ages were.
Well researched and with interesting details and characters, descriptive settings and powerful prose this is a gripping and harrowing tale of Kings and Jews, the mighty and the poor. The author spares us no detail when it comes to torture and violence – authentic and contextual.
What makes this so special is that the story and characters feel real; not constructed or used to make a point. Sensitive, empathetic and skilfully done. “

Welcome Jana. Please tell us: How did you come to writing? jana-petken

After an accident on board an aeroplane, I lost the use of my arms and hands. After 3 operations at the neck, it was suggested that I use a computer to try and get feeling back. It worked, and whilst I was typing away, I began to imagine a story. That story was my first novel, The Guardian of Secrets 222,000 words long. Now that’s a lot of typing.

How did you come up with your stories?

As a historical fiction writer, I am drawn to a subject and time period first. Then I wrap a story around the event/place. The stories usually unfold without being planned or thought out. Strange but true.

You have created great characters. Which one is your favourite?

My favourite character is, Joseph Dobbs, from The Guardian of Secrets. He is a villain, a narcissist, murdering scum of the earth, a gambler, and a drunk. But he was the most fun character I have ever written, and probably the one that has received the most comments from readers.  Having said that, I think each book I’ve written has produced memorable characters, in my eyes.

Are you like any of the characters (and how so)?

I guess you could say I am a mixture between Mercy Carver, from The Mercy Carver Series, and Maria, from The Guardian of Secrets. They are both strong women, who have had their share of ups and downs. They are fighters and so am I.

Were the plot and subplots completely planned from the start or did they change during the process, and if so, how?7271860

I don’t have a formula, as far as the writing process goes. The plot comes in the spur of the moment, as I’m writing and the sub plots come from my desire to twist and turn the story. It’s all very spontaneous.

What is your main reason for writing?

Being able to travel back in time and meet interesting people along the way.

How do you balance marketing one book and writing the next?

I don’t manage very well, to be honest. I get so engrossed with the writing I forget there are other books of mine needing attention. Marketing is the hardest part of the publishing business for me. I find American authors much more “out there” and willing to put themselves in the spotlight. I would much prefer someone else to market and promote my books, but that’s just not feasible for me, at the moment.

Tell us one odd thing about you and one really mundane thing.

I find it very difficult to settle in one place. I am always looking for new adventures. I never stay in the same house for very long. I am mundane. I do tend to watch a bit too much TV…but it is so good!

What else would you like us to know about yourself and your books?

I am very passionate about my writing. My books are dark, emotional, and, hopefully intriguing. I have been called a ‘gritty’ writer by the major reviewers. I guess that sums up my books.

How have you found the experience of self-publishing? What were your highs and lows?

The highs are having control as to when a book is published, the cover design, the editor, and the pricing. The lows are, having to do everything by myself, not being very adept on the computer, and not having enough marketing power behind me.

What is your advice to new writers?

Be patient. Don’t forget that if you don’t tell people about your work, they might not find you in that big Amazon jungle. Always have your book edited and never be afraid to ask for advice from other authors.

What is your favourite book?

The Pillars of The Earth.

What makes you laugh?

My dog, and just about anyone who possesses a sense of humour…Oh, and The Big Bang Series. I laugh easily and loudly.

What (not who) would you like to take to a lonely island?

My music. IPod with battery charger.

Who would you like to invite for dinner?

Henry Cavill from the Man of Steel movie. I want to ply him with wine and convince him to play the lead role in all my books, should they become movies. Apart from that, he’s so good to look at.

Hot or cold?

Hot

Salty or sweet?

Salty. I am addicted to crisps and nuts.

Tell us about your other books?

The Guardian of Secrets is an epic sized tome. It is a historical family saga. It has something for everyone. It’s suspenseful, a war story, revenge, murder, and of course, a bit of romance. The Mercy Carver Series: Dark Shadows and Blood Moon are sweeping historical romances with a twist of war and revenge. Mercy Carver is a great character, who gets involved with some very dangerous people, with devastating consequences. The Errant Flock was a fascinating and disturbing book to write, but I loved every minute of that journey.

What song would you pick to go with your book?

“Everybody Hurts, Sometime” R.E.M lol.

How do you handle criticism of your work?

I handle it very well, if it is constructive. I have improved elements of my writing because of constructive criticism. I find the trolls hard to comprehend. I don’t understand why they rate a book 1* before they have read it. I have found that some of them write in my genre. Instead of supporting other authors, they set out to destroy the competition. At first I was really hurt but now I am quietly getting on with my business and leaving them to theirs.

About this author jana-petken

I lived out my childhood days in, Denia on the east coast of Spain, and have after a long adventure returned there to live on a permanent basis.I joined the (British) Royal Navy at the age of seventeen. I was a leading naval police woman. After the navy, I went to work for a travel company as an overseas representative. Seasons in the Balearic Islands, followed by the Canary Islands, and North Africa, awakened my interest in “people studying.”

I found a new career as a cabin crew member for British Airways, which allowed me to travel extensively to every corner of the world, at least two or three times. I have never been to New Zealand – a pity, or to Iran, which would have been an eye opener.

Unfortunately, I had an accident on board a flight. The aircraft, a 747 was flying at 39,000 feet above Africa when it was caught in clear air turbulence. As the plane dropped my body flew upward causing my head to hit the cabin’s ceiling. I have had three major operations on my spinal cord and am now retired.

Nice to meet you all x

Call for Beta Readers for my new WW2 novel

Ostpreussischer Flüchtlingstreck 1945

My next Work In Progress in a historical novel set in Poland and Germany during WW2.

Image (1)

Ludwika is the story of a young Polish woman in Germany during and after WW2.

Hers is one of many stories of displaced people whose lives were so forcefully disrupted by German and Russian wrong-doings and International politics.

It is based on true events, filling in the (large) gaps where the facts could not be reliably established.
My initial involvement (before writing the story) was to help Ludwika’s children find those missing parts in her life story.Lud 2
The (often frustrating) research to find answers to their questions helped to create this fictional/ fractional account of a life and my vision of a woman I have never met.

If you would like to beta-read my first complete draft and give me feedback on the story please contact me via twitter @CFFBooks or leave a comment on this post.

The Spanish Inquisition, Obscured by Myth

25 Saturday Jul 2015

A real treat for fans of historical fiction. Jana Petken’s new book set during the Spanish Inquisition was a real eye opener for me.

Jana Petken

My new novel, The Errant Flock, is purely fictional, and set against the backdrop of The Spanish Inquisition. I found the subject fascinating and disturbing, so much so, I was in danger of wanting to cram factual data into the story. I didn’t. Instead, I allowed the fiction to overshadow historical facts and figures, but at the same time I incorporated various situations for my characters, some, which I believe, could have taken place during this terrible period. Cover Idea7

During research I was astonished by how politically and financially motivated the Inquisition was. Every book and document I studied, I found evidence of a Spanish Monarchy using the Inquisition to change Spain’s racial and political landscape, secure revenues by confiscation of money, property, and personal possessions of prisoners, and abusing their power on a grand scale. I was also surprised to find that the Inquisition did bring certain order to towns that were blindly persecuting suspected heretics, Jews, Muslims, and converts, without…

I cannot recommend these books strongly enough. I found them on twitter a long time ago and have been a huge fan ever since.

Just Olga

Hi all:

As you know, on Friday’s I bring you guest authors. Recently I’ve also been trying to bring to my blog authors and bloggers I know and exchange comments with often, but I’ve come to realise they’ve never made it as guests to my blog yet. Today it’s Judith Barrow’s turn. She’s a fellow author who is very generous in discovering interesting content and promoting it, she is a sharp reviewer with a very keen eye on Rosie’s Book Review Team (hey!), and she writes about subjects that will be close to many people’s hearts.  And her latest book was just published on the 17th of July, so, what better reason!

First, before I forget, here is her blog:

And what her Amazon author page says about her:

Interview with Brenda Perlin about “L.A. Punk Rocker”

23 Thursday Jul 2015

Posted by Christoph Fischer in Uncategorized

Billy quote LAPunk_FullCVRL.A. Punk Rocker has just been released. It’s an anthology based on eighties Punk. All the writers from Los Angeles were involved in the punk music scene back in the day. There is one writer from the UK, Mark Barry who writes from Billy Idol’s point of View and it seems that first story is what Billy Idol was commenting on in his tweet. he wrote, Pretty wild chapter on me…maybe u shouldv’e written my book, good luck with it..BFI 😉

Doesn’t get too much better than that but that story does deserve the attention!

L.A. Punk Rocker

by Brenda Perlin, Mark Barry, Steven E. Metz, Deborah Hernandez-Runions and Cindy Jimenez Mora.

Fifteen stories of the punk era set in Los Angeles, written by LA Punk Queen Brenda Perlin and her friends who lived every moment of an electric era in the City of Angels. That unique and precious time when punk rock was more than just a rebellion.

Inside you’ll discover Billy Idol. Iggy Pop. X. U2. Bad Religion. Tales of local punk rockers on the brink of glorious fame. Late nights at the Roxy. Wild times at the Whiskey with some of the best rock ever.  Here you’ll find the in-your-face attitude, the clothes, the fashion, the sex, the music as hard as nails and fast as lightning.

Brenda and her friends were somewhere every night queuing backstage, in hotel rooms with the band, partying on the streets…and avoiding irate parents on school nights!

It’s all here.

Interview with Brenda: bren
Tell us about the concept of the book.

I wanted to take the reader back in time. Back to when I was a teenager and felt misunderstood and alienated. A time when nothing was better than the music and being on the streets of Hollywood in clubs or hanging out at our local dive, Oki Dog. When I  felt connected to something for the first time and for me this was my very first taste of freedom which was beyond empowering.

When did you have the idea for the book?

There would have been no L.A. Punk Rocker had Mark Barry not talked me into it. I had no intention on going back there but somehow he inspired me and got me excited. What can I say? The guy can be very good at convincing. I don’t call him #MrWord for no reason.

Also, there is no way this book would have come out so well without the help of historical fiction novelist, Mary Ann Bernal. She is fearless! A spartan warrior princess. If not in this life, she could have been in her last. There is no one like her and I owe so much to her.

How do you know Mark Barry?LAPunk_CVR_MED

We met on Facebook. He contacted me requesting an interview after Shattered Reality was published for his Wizard’s Cauldron blog. At the time the book was called Home Wrecker so I think it was that title that caught his attention. Later, he asked me to write something for his anthology Reality Bites which inspired me to write my second book, Burnt Promises. Where are we without the people that inspire us???

I was so impressed because he was the only one at the time doing “meaty” interviews and shared the authors interests on the page with photos and videos. We have all copied that from him ever since. Sincerely, he is a wordsmith and there is something quite unique about his writing talent. There is brilliance in his work like an artist carving out a precious stone. He might not get discovered until he is dead and gone but I hope he knows how much I value him while he is on this great earth. Talent alone does not make this man special.

Can you give us an excerpt or tell us your favourite anecdote of the times?

Might as well share something from Mark Barry’s One Night in Richmond Park.

“You take a look at her in the mirror. A shock of spikey blonde hair every bit as platinum coloured as your own, back in the day. She hasn’t changed a bit. No dye. It’s real. All too real. Unbelievably gavelled cheekbones – speed cheekbones, he thought at the time – as if they’d been sculpted. Sharp as knives, those cheekbones. Virtually no body fat percentage. A face you’d never stop touching, never stop kissing. A face that launched a thousand ships. Looking at her face was an aesthetic experience. Like art. You can’t stop staring. Red lipstick and burning brown eyes sheltered underneath two stud-pierced eyebrows. Her vest obscures a black bra with two fashionably displayed straps clinging to angular, pallid shoulders.

Stunning. Well, she would be, wouldn’t she, Billy? If you were her.”

Which is your favourite story within the book?

I love Steven E. Metz, Deborah Hernandez-Runions, and Cindy Jimenez Mora’s raw stories but I have to say if I had to pick a favorite it would be Mark Barry’s last story in L.A. Punk Rocker, One Night in Richmond Park. It is breathtaking in my opinion. There is even a little bit of a paranormal fairly-dust sprinkled on to make it that much more unearthly.

How would you describe the theme or the message of the book?

I believe there are many messages. The love of music, walking to the beat of your own drum, not having to be like everyone else and for me, the best times of my life. It truly was. Can’t remember ever having so much fun!

If you could go back in time – would you – if only for one night? If so, which night?bren

More than the music and the concerts, hanging out with The Who, David Bowie, U2, Iggy Pop and even standing RIGHT IN FRONT of BILLY IDOL it was all about the friends. Sitting in my girlfriends beaten down Datsun being together, laughing and sharing stories was the best. I mean, it was real friendship and it made the hard stuff not so bad.

Tell us a little about yourself as writer and as person.

I have been writing for years but mostly as a hobby. I spent my teenage years writing in coffee shops on paper napkins. Believe it or lot, though I sat and wrote for hours but I can’t remember ever getting kicked out.

I have gone through a lot (I mean) A LOT in my life and had enough to fill a book so I wrote a trilogy, Brooklyn and Bo Chronicles.

Since things have calmed down I now write things that inspire me. I wrote a short story on child bullies, Ty the Bull with KD Emerson and another short story on rescuing stray dogs, Alex the Mutt.

Tell us about your writing history. When was the first time you decided to write and when was the first time you did?

My first story was written in elementary school, Alexandria the Great. It was about a young girl who was an outcast and bullied. Pretty much an ongoing theme to me. That is where Alex the Mutt got her name, Alexandria.

Did anyone influence you / encourage you to become a writer?

I would say Judy Blume was my big influence. As a chid it was a treat to go to the library and that is where I met Judy Blume. Her book, Are You There God It’s Me Margaret changed my life. Made me not feel so alone and misunderstood.

When did you decide to write in your chosen genre(s)?

It spilled in my lap. I was going through a very dramatic breakup (divorce) and I had to get out my feelings somewhere, so my saving grace was writing about my misadventures and that is just what I did. Without the writing I am not sure how I would have survived the anguish and ongoing stress.

What is your life like outside of writing?

When I am not writing or busy with social media I actually have a very quiet, rewarding life. My boyfriend and I enjoy each others company so the little things are the best. We have travelled quite a bit in the last five years. Hopefully, one of these days we will make it down to you and so I can really call you a “friend” though there are no better than you Christoph. You are lovely in more ways than one.

What makes you laugh?

I love to act silly and to get slap-happy. Punch-drunk, I think they call it Doesn’t take much.

Who would you like to invite for dinner?

Right now it would have to be Billy Idol since my new release is L.A. Punk Rocker. Have you heard how he Tweeted me back the other night? He actually picked up L.A. Punk Rocker and wrote me back. I couldn’t believe it was him but IT WAS HIM!

What song would you pick to go with your book?

It would have to be Rebel Yell by Billy Idol

Brenda Perlin is an independent contemporary fiction author of five titles and numerous short stories. From novels to illustrated books, Brenda evokes passionate responses in her readers by using a provocatively unique writing style. Ever since Brenda was a child, she has been fascinated with the process. She draws her biggest inspiration from Judy Blume who sparked her obsession with pursuing personal expression through prose. Brenda has always lost herself in the world of literature, especially in coffee shops where she documented her ideas on paper napkins.

Her first series, the highly-acclaimed Brooklyn and Bo Chronicles, captures the soul-wrenching conflicts of a couple struggling for emotional fulfillment against those who would keep them apart. Next, Brenda ventured into the realm of graphic novellas with Ty the Bull, a story about a young boy who overcomes bullying, and Alex the Mutt, which explores the journey of love and loss of a beloved dog.

Brenda is diligently working on her next project while sipping hot lattes. She has replaced napkins with a laptop, but her enthusiasm hasn’t waned. All her works are available through Amazon.com and its subsidiaries.
