Review: “ORBS” by Nicholas Sansbury Smith

Today I am introducing a very talented scifi author. You all know I am not a huge fan of Science Fiction but I connected with the author over animal welfare and was curious to see what he was like as an author and was pleasantly surprised. Books like ORBS make me want read Science fiction more often.

bella and me

“ORBS” by Nicholas Sansbury Smith is an excellently written and fascinating science fiction story set in the near future of 2061, six years after a solar storm has rendered Earth almost inhabitable. Scientist Dr. Sophie Winston is on a mission in Cheyenne Mountain when suddenly the connection to the outside world is cut off. When she and her team venture into the outside they find the world full of luminous orbs and unknown creatures.

The book has a very realistic and detailed apocalyptic setting that in itself surpasses stories of a similar nature. The addition of the unknown creatures and the why and how of it adds to the suspense element and the eerieness of the situation for our scientists. There is also a flashback to the time of the solar storm of 2055 and a bit of background to Sophie’s character which makes her more than just a scientist.

I was surprised how much I enjoyed the story and how well the parts worked together. I only occasionally read science fiction but books like ORBS make me want to do so more often. The book has a somewhat open ending since it is the first in a series. Smith has a winning combination at his hands with his exceptionally strong characters and plotlines. Highly recommended.

REVIEW: “Portals” by Maer Wilson

Portals cover Sm

“Portals: Book 2 of The Thulukan Chronicles” is another fun read by this very talented author. Maer Wilson takes us back to the world of paranormal/ supernatural detectives La Fi and Thulu in San Francisco. Their world is threatened to be overrun by all types of out-worldly visitors, thanks to sudden openings of some portals that link worlds to each other.
La Fi is a medium and can see the dead (- as can her three year old son Carter) while other characters in the novel have diffeent abilities in this supernatural mystery novel. There are ghosts, elves, daemons, mindreaders and telepaths in the mix.
In “Relics” La Fi had already some dealings with the portals and she tries not to get too involved in what is happening with them but she soon has no choice but to help some outworldly visitors.
Thankfully not sticking to repetitive formula Wilson is stepping up her game cleverly by letting her characters evolve as well as their abilities, in fact, she allows the entire world to change and be challenged. The new races are imaginative and make for some lively, fresh and original reading.
What I personally liked best about the story is the very dry humour with which La Fi narrates the story. Too often harrassed by the dead and trying to run a business and save the world she is a fantastic main character, an often reluctant heroine but a spirited and likeable one. While the humour is very entertaining the action part of the story is incorporated perfectly into the plot and makes for smooth and captivating reading.
I am looking forward to the tricks Wilson has up her sleeves for book 3.

REVIEW: “The Clay Lion” by Amalie Jahn

“The Clay Lion” by Amalie Jahn is an amazing piece of heart-breaking and uplifting fiction. Aimed probably at young adults as main target audience the book however has a lot to say that is relevant to people of all ages.
It is the story of one brave young woman that choses to go back in time to try and save her fatally ill younger brother.
The idea of time travel did not appeal to me at first since it has been done many times and some authors in the genre can try to be too clever for their own good.
“The Clay Lion” is way above that level and raises some fascinating and worthy questions about regrets, missed opportunities, second chances and destiny. By doing so successfully the book qualifies – in my humble opinion at least – as literary fiction and philosophical offering on the subject of turning back time. It made me think hard about what I would chose to relive and try and change in my life.
The main story – the disease of her younger brother – is often sad but always full of hope and positive and important messages, a tribute to courage and an appeal to the good side in all of us.
Written with charm and emotional wisdom this is hugely rewarding and captivating. A powerful and important read and a talented author to watch.

Review: “Spellbound in His Arms” by Angel Sefer

Pageflex Persona [document: PRS0000031_00006]

“Spellbound in His Arms” by Angel Sefer is a great romantic suspense story set on the beautiful Greek island of Corfu. The story throws the reader in at the deep end with investigative reporter Jackie Alexander being caught breaking and entering in a mansion while trying to find information about a series of ‘accidents’. The suspicious events are eliminating heirs to a family fortune in Greece and Jackie’s wants to prevent further deaths by taking matters in her own hand.
Caught by the very attractive detective Michael Apolstolou she soon joins forces with him but the relationship between them remains ‘complicated’.
The story is written so smoothly and well paced that I hardly noticed the time passing. The chemistry between the characters is right there from the start but Sefer has thankfully added a few more threads to the complex plot to keep readers intrigued and involved beyond the romance story.
With a love for detail the author describes the life of the rich, the corrupt and the powerful, the evil doers and their intrigues, distrust and often unhappy lives.
Romance and mystery lovers are being served well here with great suspense and a strong romance between the two main characters taking centre stage in an exciting and passionate crime novel.
Great entertainment

Angel

I’m a business executive who has majored in economics, a wife and a mother, and I’m obsessed with the magical world of books. For as long as I can remember myself, I would be passionate about reading fascinating romance, mystery and adventure novels. By the time I reached eighteen, I had already started writing my first story and since then, I’ve written twelve mystery and romance novels. I just love to write and of course, I love to read.

The Greek islands–alluring destinations which cast a spell on the visitor from the very first moment–are among my favorite settings. I’ve written a whole series of romance and mystery novels–The Greek Isles Series–each taking place on a different island.

In this series, while sharing with my readers the development of the romance between my hero and heroine and the unfolding of the mystery, I take the opportunity to also share with them the unbelievable experience of visiting some of the most enchanting Greek islands–places of impeccable beauty where nature exists lavishly in hundreds of shades of green and blue, and in which centuries of Greek tradition coexist harmoniously with cosmopolitan activity.

Spellbound in His Arms is the first novel in The Greek Isles Series, and it’s available at Amazon. It’s a story of mystery and romance, taking place in Greece, on the beautiful island of Corfu, one of my most favorite vacation destinations in the Ionian Sea.

I’m now completing Love on the Greek Isles, the second novel in this series to be published soon. Love on the Greek Isles blends mystery, romance, and adventure on Mykonos, one of the most beautiful Greek islands in the Aegean Sea. The picturesque setting on one hand and the unique way of life on a Greek island, which reflects the values and traditions of the Greek people, on the other set the background for this intriguing story.

BOOK REVIEW: “Fur Ball Fever” by Maureen Fisher

“Fur Ball Fever” by Maureen Fisher caught my attention because I am a dog owner and I loved the idea of an entertaining crime read that involves dogs. I have to say that in that sub-genre the book is easily the best I have come across.
Grace owns Murphy, a slightly naughty dog but it is a client’s dog that has gone missing. She recruits her ex Nick to help to locate the dog. Foul play is supected since the missing dog won awards and the investigation leads to some marvellously written situations and characters.
The screwball comedy and chemistry between the main leads is amazing and really funny but the book is full of other hilarious, colourful and memorable characters. Grace’s aunt Beth was one of my favourites, but any dog owner will recognise and enjoy the odd suspects of the often competitive world of dog shows. I breed dogs and have had my share of odd encounters with people like that and many of the scenes in Fisher’s book rang more than true to me.
There is also an entertaining ‘kinky’ subplot in the story; the romance part of the story is steamy in parts but not distractingly so.
I hate to use the often over-used review phrase but the book was a real page turner for me and made me read on when I should have been doing other things. It is that good.
Well written, amusing and full of life this is an excellent fun read that should find a lot of fans, not just amongst dog owners. I hope there will be a sequel.

NEW RELEASE: UVI POZNANSKY: RISE TO POWER (THE DAVID CHRONICLES)

Rise to power new

Acclaimed author Uvi Poznansky has just released a new book! The work, entitled Rise to Power, is the first volume in her new series The David Chronicles. The story explores the life of one of the most admired figures in history and the most complex figure in the bible: David.

I am currently reading and loving it. The book will be free on Amazon DEC 12 2013 (tomorrow on day of posting). Look out for my review on http://www.christophfischerbooks.com tomorrow.

David is famous for bringing his kingdom from the brink of annihilation to a prosperous age, a renaissance. With all his gifts, he is indeed a renaissance man. This is his story as you have never heard it before: from the king himself, telling the unofficial version, the one he never allowed his court scribes to recount. In his mind, history is written to praise the victorious—but at the last stretch of his illustrious life, he feels an irresistible urge to tell the truth. In the first volume of the series, David gives you a fascinating account of his early years, culminating with a tribal coronation. Rooted in ancient lore, his is a surprisingly modern memoir.

Educated as an architect in Israel and as a software engineer in New York, the author is diverse in her academic and cultural perspectives. Her experiences have allowed her to create stories touching upon the innermost depths of the human psyche and drama.

Uvi Poznansky has appeared on Blog Talk Radio numerous times. She has received the #1 Author award from AUTHORSdb, and has received rave reviews from Amazon Hall of Fame reviewer Grady Harp for her previous books, which include her literary fiction novel Apart From Love, her poetry book, Home, her collection of dark tales Twisted, and her biblically inspired story A Favorite Son.
