End of year post: Soul-soothing

28564unilad-imageoptim-screen-shot-2016-11-14-at-11-00-212016 has been a year of much tragedy, ugliness and extremes:

On the negative side, there’s been a lot of worries about my loved ones, illness and depression around me, bad situations that I can’t fix, death of idols and loved ones, political frustration over 15724999_10209240031571390_4203298083530084222_oextremism, xenophobia, Breborisjohnsonxit, Trump (and what all this comes with for us), and grave concerns about the course humanity and societies are taking.

On the plus side, however, I grew some fantastic new roots in my adapted home in Wales, joined the LibDems as a party I can fully relate to, made great progress in the book world, started playing football and got permanent residency in the UK.15731764_398936727108529_3489619596171925727_o-1 2016-finalist

This week, as we’re looking back at the year behind us, the worries are taking over my mind again. What can I do? How can I change the world to become a nicer place, get people to regain their trust in others, open their hearts and reach out, be generous and kind and accepting?

The answer is: I don’t know, and my confidence that 2017 is going to better than 2016 is low at best.jo-cox-labour-mp

general-organa-carrie-fisherSo, looking back at 2016 in anger and to 2017 with a heavy heart, I do the only thing I can do: Feel the fear and carry on regardless. I will continue to hope, dream, campaign, argue and fight for a better future and do the best I can. Not give up.

In worrying times the best soothing for the soul is always laughter and a song.

So let me end this year’s blog activity with a soul soothing Soul Cha Cha – a song and dance that always makes me smile. Here’s to the future! See you next year with more of the same and an unbroken spirit! One, two, Cha cha cha, three, four cha cha cha…!

Review: “Vatican Princess” by C.W. Gortner

25614810I was lucky enough to meet the author at several events and talks at the Oxford Historical Novelist Society. Inspired by his passion I purchased “Marlene” and was very impressed with the author’s take on Marlene Dietrich. I wanted more, although the subjects of his other novels were not as familiar to me.

I was sceptical as to whether I would like them but soon got drawn into the book (I listened to the audible version). Passion and attention to detail have gone into every page, as if the author had lived and breathed Lucrezia’s story for months. Having met him in person, I believe that to be actually possible.14183951_10153611528007132_3016249961376762625_n

I established an immediate sense of connection with her and her dilemmas. Gortner has a gift for creating an intimate and urgent perspective that draws you deeply into his characters, so much, you forget that this is a historic novel and not the diary of Lucrezia, and that you live in the present time and aren’t living in Rome or the other locations of the novel.

I’ve also realised how much I hadn’t known about the times of Lucrezia, the Vatican and its power, the politics of Europe at the time, court intrigue and out-wittying of opponents. This was quite an emotionally involved and powerful read that made a lasting impression on me. Amazing.

Great post about addiction and letting go

You’re extremely disgusted with an old habit. You’re ranting. You’re pacing. You’re regurgitating. You’re spent. You pick yourself up from the floor, dry your tears, and swear on your life that this is the last time. You throw away all accouterments, all paraphernalia, all reminders of the loathed and dreaded addiction. You make it through the day with firm resolve. Then you awaken the following morning with an insatiable craving. You recall your commitment and fight doggedly not to give in. You argue with yourself. You become frustrated. The stress grows into a pressing mass in your belly. Then suddenly… a comforting thought: One more day won’t hurt! You acquiesce. You give in. And the roller coaster ride begins…

A teacher once told me that the masters, the avatars, often carry an addiction in order to stay in form — to…

Honour those who’ve Gone Before – Send 2016 to its Grave – and Fight!

Let’s relegate 2016 to the dark and distant past, and kick 2017 into gear and fight!

We have empires to destroy!

The Last Krystallos

This is a difficult post to write… We are at the rear end of 2016
and many of us are very pleased to see it close.
I’m not blaming the year itself, but it’s as good a time as any to start anew…

honour-those-whove-gone-before-send-2016-to-its-grave-and-fight-the-last-krystallos

It’s been tough year politically, personally, and for many of us devastating in different ways. We have mourned political change, grieved lost and broken promises, and endured lies and political manoeuvres. We’ve lost celebrities, almost at a rate of several a month, and we have lost many close to us. Members of my own family and my husband’s family have lost loved ones, and we are holding those still in ill health close to us. As human beings we have also mourned the loss of families and individuals unable to escape war and destruction, and have seen refugees both rescued and shunned.

5 Star Review Of Miami Morning by Diane M. Denton

Dianne Denton is a marvellous writer herself, so her recommendation has huge gravitas for me. Going to check this one out!

Mary Clark, Writer

A Beautifully Written Journey of Growth and Faith, Review by Diane M. Denton

BannerBlueSmall

As I read deeper into Mary Clark’s new novel, “Miami Morning,” I began to have the sense of following a pilgrimage, a journey of growth and faith. Out of the “levels to her life” as a teacher, community activist and friend, Leila emerges smart, cultured, amiable, supportive, and sometimes self-depreciating, a forty-something woman who engages her senses as she perceives her surroundings like an artist and doesn’t shy away from challenges. She has a need for place and purpose, whether she is in Miami teaching Social Studies, helping to beautify and maintain a playground, and making sure a bright student losing his hearing doesn’t fall by the wayside; or on a year’s sabbatical in South Africa as part of a team setting up clinics in small villages and working to diminish the marginalization of the disabled.

Welsh Wednesdays Review: “Stella Windermere: The Case of the Polish Sailor” by Suzanne Bowditch

I love a good mystery, and this one being set in Port Talbot, a town in South Wales that I know well, had a particularly great touch for me. It is also set in the 1970s, which, for me, adds greatly to the charm of the novel.
You’ve gotta admire the retired and very quirky amateur sleuth Stella Windermere for her attitude. She provides many smiles and laughs as she takes over another investigation from the clueless police. The setting is really authentic and most enjoyable, and the turns and twists of the plot did surprise me many times. There are some great characters in this, from quirky to dark, the dialogue is full of adorable Welsh idiosyncrasis and the novel oozes warmth and loveliness.
The case of the Polish sailor however is a complex one and gets more complicated when another murder occurs, taking the investigation up a notch. I thought many times I knew what was going on, only to be thrown off course again.
Cozy, entertaining and very addictive to this reader this is definitely recommended.
I loved it.

Here’s the official blurb:

Port Talbot, 1970s.

When a body is found on the beachfront at Aberavon,  amateur sleuth Stella Windermere is intrigued. The police are confused as to the identity of the mysterious man. All they have to go on is an ID tag next to the body. When a well known member of the community is bludgeoned to death at a party, the mystery deepens. Quickly embroiled in the case,Stella finds that she has to use all her wits to capture the murderer, along with her new assistant, Joe.

Review: “Glimpses” by Hugh W Roberts

I really enjoyed this book. It covers an odd and eclectic range of topics and 097a4-glimpses2bkdp2bcover2bcopystyles, but all shine with high quality writing and editing. Hugh mentions several times how he suffers from mild dyslexia and reading this book, you would never have known.
I enjoyed the moving ghost encounter at an abandoned station in London and a series of stories about a wedding and its complications. “The Truth App.”, os another personal favourtie of mine, the longest and most complex of the stories.
Glimpses is an well-chosen title, for these stories are not just glimpses into the characters but also into the mind of the author. Despite the change of genres and locations, there is an underlying warmth and poetic perception of the world, sometimes more worldly than at other times, but always reflective and thoughtful. I’m not a big fan of short stories and prefer to get into lengtier literature so I can really get into the characters. Glimpses achieved in many a short story an engagement and connection between me and the characters that novels didn’t achieve.
Quite an achievement and a very enjoyable and touching selection.

But don’t just take my word for it, here’s another review:

Glimpses is a delightfully twisted set of short stories inspired by author Roberts’ blog. If you follow his blog, you may recognize a few of his terrifying tales reminiscent of stories in the sci-fi genre of Twilight Zone or Outer Limits peppered with a dash of horror. “The Truth App” is the piece de resistance in this collection of 28 stories. Roberts’ biting wit and deft tale-telling will have you reading on the edge of your…well, your reading device! A great read that will have you begging Roberts for more!

Interview with Uvi Poznansky Author of “Dancing with Air” and “Love in Times of War”

Interview with
Uvi Poznansky
Author of
Dancing with Air and Love in Times of War
Uvi is no stranger to my blog, so I won’t need to introduce this fantastic writer to you. Her new novel and box set are no exception to her string of literary successes. So without further ado, wecome back Uvi and please tell us, how did you come up with the idea for your new release, Love in Times of War?litow-frontcover-apple
The idea came to me in the last stages of writing my novel, Dancing with Air, which is a love story set in WWII, between a marine and a rising star, a pianist. The story made me curious to read other love stories set against the background of war, and to compare the ways I developed the story with the ways other authors did it. The result is a new boxed set, titled Love in Times of War.
To create this unique, wonderful selection, I looked at hundreds of romance novels and scores of authors. It  includes twelve romance stories written by the best and the brightest authors in the genre: Tamara Ferguson, Jacquie Biggar, D.G. Torrens, Angelica Kate, Traci Hall, Jennifer St. Giles, Regina Puckett, Suzanne Jenkins, S.R. Mallery, Susan Jean Ricci, Bridgitte Lesley, and me. Some of the stories have never been published before. They were being written specifically for inclusion in this amazing collection, and quite often I was consumed by worries, fearing that they will not be completed in time for our release day. But to my delight, it all came together in the nick of time.
The theme of love in times of war is a timely one. It lends itself to historical romance, contemporary romance, military romance and wounded warrior romance, but in all its flavors, it invites you into a feast of emotions.

You have great covers for all your books, but the one for Love in Times of War is truly special. How does your book cover creation process work?

My covers are always based on my own art, in all its forms (oil paintings, watercolors, or digital imagery) and they express the same vision as my writing. My art and my writing are two sides of the same coin. I write with a paintbrush and paint with a pen.

For the word capital L in the word Love I found a lovely font called Precious, because I felt that it expresses the meaning of this word by making the capital letter so flowery and romantic. For the image I selected a dramatic, explosive background, symbolizing the dangerous time of war. The lovers are oblivious to danger, all they feel is the moment of love and the heartwarming intimacy between them.
My intention was to convey a sense of a substantial collection, presented like volumes in an encyclopedia. Therefore, for the spine I used golden lettering on rich red background. I added the lit and shadowed edges for each spine, to achieve depth. Most importantly, at the bottom of it I added a medallion, depicting a detail from the cover of each standalone novel.

Many of your novels, including Dancing with Air, have been converted into audio books. What has been the impact on your regular sales? Has the audio books gained a new audience for you?

Tales around a fire. That’s how it started… the oral tradition, the first way knowledge was stored and transmitted. Thousands of years later, we’ve rediscovered the power and presence of the human voice in the telling of new tales. Digital technology has made the recording and delivery of high-quality audio narration both convenient and affordable. Now storytellers everywhere are lifting their words from the page (or pixel) and breathing new life into their tales through audio fiction podcasts and audiobooks.
Having worked with several talented voice artists I can tell you that breathing life into a story is an amazing process. It starts with the audition script, which can prove to be a challenge to many actors. Usually I know instantly when I hear the right voice. By instinct I sense the capacity of the narrator to immerse himself in the character, to the point that he can live in her skin. This is the real magic. when author and narrator are giving it all, in service of their characters.
So if you spend a lot of time driving on long trips, or even sitting around the fireplace, you can imagine what a great companion audiobooks can be to spin away the hours. Great narrators make books come alive. Being so close to you, breathing words into your ear, they make the experience both intimate and heightened, with every nuance in the story becoming fully expressed.
litow-spines-small

What was the main objective of bundling your works with other romance authors? How did you put something like that together?

Despite being a private person I find myself increasingly engaged with readers and listeners. Why? because of my characters. Having sprung from my mind onto the page, they might die there, pressed between the front and back covers–unless I make it possible for them to spring from the page to your mind.
I thrive on reaching out to my audience. Every day I discover new ways to create this connection and strengthen it. By far the best way is forging alliances with other authors, whose work is of outstanding quality and whose audience appreciates creativity. To this end I interview fellow authors on my blog, which is my way of recognizing their talent. I organize author events on Facebook to showcase our work. I read a lot of novels, note their reviews, and actively seek out book recommendations, all of which allows me to choose the best and the brightest for the most ambitious team projects I created to date: boxed sets. In my mind, they are meant to celebrate excellence in writing. They allow you to discover new authors and from there, it is up to you to read more of their books.
Uvi

Tell us in detail about Love in Times of War.

At no other point is passion put to the test as in dire times of war. From the American Civil War to WWII, from Vietnam to the War in Afghanistan to the Persian Gulf, the stories in this boxed set summon the strength of true lovers. Written by bestselling, award-winning, and USA Today authors, the novels and novellas in this collection tell of overcoming the odds to celebrate the victory of love.
If you like Military Romance, Wounded Warrior Romance, Historical Romance, Contemporary Romance, or Romantic Suspense, this anthology invites you to triumph over the worst of conditions. Together with these unforgettable lovers, go through coping with loss, struggling with injuries and rehabilitation, and facing difficult homecomings. And just like them, inspired by desire, find the courage to bring forth the best in us.

Review: “A Merry Christmas Wedding Mystery, Georgie Shaw Cozy Mystery #4” by Anna Celeste Burke

Image result for burke christmas weddingThis is another wonderful helping by one of the kindest and funniest cozy mystery writers: Anna Celeste Burke, certainly no stranger to this blog, if you recall my interview with her and reviews of her previous novels.
Warm and witty this murder mystery with Georgie Shaw, the amateur detective, is
set during the run up to her wedding. According to her fiance, she is on the verge of becoming Bridzilla, so, to calm her nerves she pays a visit to the making of Marvelous Marley World’s newest feature film, The Lonely Swan Prince. There she gets drawn into another mystery case, this time because of the unexplicable sudden disappearance of the movie’s leading lady.
Burke writes fabulous characters, outstanding suspense and hilarious dialogue. Well plotted and with a set of entertaining situations this is another one not to be missed, and, as I just saw, already a bestseller on Amazon. So don’t take my word for it. Enjoy!

About the author:

Life is an extravaganza of unpredictable dimension and proportion: figuring out how to hang tough and make the most of the wild ride is the challenge.

On my way to Oahu to join the rock musician and high school drop-out I married in Tijuana, I was nabbed by the police as a runaway. When the police let me go and the rock band broke up, my husband and I had to find another way to survive. Our next stop: Disney World where we trained to be chefs, courtesy of the Walt Disney World University.

A GED for my husband, and many more years of education eventually landed us in academia—with Ph.D.s from the University of Michigan we took professor jobs with U of M’s longstanding football rival, The Ohio State University.

Retired now from my role as a professor in social work and behavioral science, I have picked up a long-time interest in writing fiction. In my professional career I wrote and published widely as a scholar, with more than forty manuscripts of varying lengths on my vita. I also carried out hundreds of training, consulting and speaking engagements on a number of gloriously nerdy topics.

So what on earth does a research scientist have in common with a mystery writer? As avid fans of the mystery genre will tell you at the core of any good mystery is a passionate search for the truth. Discovering the truth involves finding and assembling pieces of complex puzzles in order to solve seemingly intractable problems—scientist and sleuth are cut from the same cloth!

Still married to the same sweet guy, I live with my husband in one of the seven desert resort cities in the Palm Springs area. In addition to reading and writing mysteries I enjoy painting, hiking, hanging out with my handsome husband and tending to my Siamese cats.

As my heroine, Jessica Huntington will tell you, the Sonoran Desert is a beautiful setting to ponder life’s mysteries, by the surrounding mountains and the bountiful delights of the desert resort communities.

A Dead Husband is the first of the Jessica Huntington Desert Cities Mysteries. Soon to be released: A Dead Sister, Jessica Huntington Desert Cities Mystery #2
