Today I would like to introduce a fellow Welsh writer to Mystery Mondays: John Nicholl. Please tell our readers: What type of crime fiction do you write and why? 
I write dark and topical psychological thrillers, which draw heavily on my experiences as a police officer and child protection social worker.
Tell us about the concept behind your books. How did you get the idea?
My books are intended primarily as entertaining psychological suspense thrillers, but if I raise awareness and understanding of important social issues like domestic violence along the way, I’m gratified by that.
Who is your favourite Detective?
Dangerous Davies who features in the Leslie Thomas novels.
Tell us about your Detective / main character.
DI Gravel is: Welsh, overweight, heavy drinking, old school, world weary, and dedicated.
Who would you cast to play the characters in a movie?
Ray Winston, if he could manage the Welsh accent. I’d really love Michael Sheen to play the villain, Dr Galbraith. No one can stop me dreaming.
Are you like any of the characters (and how so)?
Nicholson, the social work manager in White is the coldest colour, is based in part on me. I was in the same child protection role, with some of the same responsibilities and experiences.
How violent are your novels?
My books are very violent, but the violence is implied rather than graphic.
Do you include humour?
The police officers and social workers use dark humour as a stress release valve, just like in real life.
What are you working on now?
I’m writing a third novel, and both White is the coldest colour and When evil calls your name are currently being produced as audiobooks.
What is your favourite book?
Slaughter House Five by Kurt Vonnegut
