Here we follow the Carmody family and its various members from the Easter Rising in Dubling in 1916 onwards. The author provides a detailed and well researched setting, bringing alive the times, much as I would have imagined them.
As times changes, so does the fate of the family. They move to London and the novel also takes to the trenches of WW1.
Life pans out quite differently for the different Carmodies, whether through their political allegiances or through personal choices and circumstances.
Petken chose a very interesting setting for her novel, which is full of fascinating historical detail and moving personal drama. Love, betrayal and war – it doesn’t get much better than this. A beautiful and moving novel, well worth your time.
I’m looking forward to the next part in the saga.
